Diocese of Virginia

Revised crest, simplified to one-color

Recently we completed an updated identity system for the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia. This project was an opportunity to completely rethink the Diocese’ message as well as refresh the Diocese identity system. The project included strategic naming and messaging recommendations based on interviews and discussion groups. Working alongside our friends at the Diocese, we developed a new tagline that better expresses the church’s relevance in today’s world; redrew an historic crest and icons, and redesigned their business graphics. The Diocese’s new identity system shows a fresh modern face to the world, but is rooted in centuries of tradition. Continue reading for more images of the new Diocese of Virginia identity.

Do You Have the Winning Formula?

It is time again for one of the most prestigious design award shows in the Richmond area, the Greater Richmond Awards for Design Excellence, better known as GRADE! Entries are due March 7-11, and the award ceremony for GRADE 6 will be held April 28th at the Virginia Historical Society. Start getting those entries ready! Click for more info on GRADE.

This year, AIGA asked J H I to take on the design of the promotional pieces for GRADE and we couldn’t have been more flattered. We created the theme of the “winning formula” and used a vintage apothecary look (with a little mystery à la Alice in Wonderland thrown in for good measure) to create labels for bottles which contain the elements of good design. See more of the work, and the incredible photography by Tyler Darden (Click here for more of Tyler’s work), after the jump!

J H I Goes to Washington!

Diorama

We recently completed an exciting project in collaboration with Virginia Tourism Corporation and our friends at Richmond Metropolitan Convention & Visitor’s Bureau (RMCVB) and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. With the main goal to promote the Grand Opening of the VMFA museum expansion on May 1, we created a special edition of the “History” campaign that will be installed in the Gallery Place station in the DC Metro.

J H I Good Intern

Now that I’ve been introduced a few times on the blog, I thought it was about time I made my blogging debut and gave a little glimpse into the life of a design intern! As the newest addition to the J H I team, I’ve been busy from the time they gave me a computer and the number to the J H I credit card – for Staples office supplies and lunch orders of course! Here are just a few of the things that I’ve designed over the past few months, working with John Homs, J H I’s creative director.

ctrs_LightsUp

CenterStage asked us to create the identity for their Youth Open House, “Lights Up.” This was a great opportunity to create a youthful, fun identity for a new event in Richmond. In addition to that logo, I designed a few billboards for Center Stage youth programs and it’s been really exciting to see them when I am driving around town!

domr_greentech
I also designed an identity for Dominion Resources GreenTech Incubator here in Richmond. It was recently started to assist businesses focused on energy efficiency and green technologies.

fmbk_twitter

And, rounding out my experience with working across all mediums, I recently completed the Twitter background for First Market Bank to help them campaign for the Shorty Awards , the event that honors top tweeters in various categories. I mean, who doesn’t love #Bacon?!

As a final note, J H I is happy to be joining the ranks of facebook. Click to become a fan of J H I!
